About Abraxas
A family business since 1977
Abraxas was set up as a family business in 1977 by Richard Maddocks in a small shop on Norwich's historic Timberhill. The concept was a new one and a definite break from tradition.
While every other jeweller seemed happy stocking the same pieces, Abraxas would offer contemporary gold and silver designs unseen elsewhere in the region.
Yet the Abraxas concept was about more than just products. From day one it was about 'people'. Treating customers like friends, advising them rather than selling to them, in a relaxed and friendly environment.
From idea to the high street jewellers
Things took off quickly and the foundations were laid for the Abraxas we know today. Three decades on, Abraxas is to be found thriving in the stunning Royal Arcade, in the heart of Norwich city centre.
Over sixteen thousand different items now make for the feast of design and colour which greets visitors from all over the United Kingdom.
But the most rewarding thing of all? Customers who chose Abraxas back in 1977 still choose Abraxas today. Yes, the customer service concept is alive and well.
And the name 'Abraxas'?
Well Richard, and wife Jenny, stumbled across the name on an album cover by one of their favourite bands, 70s supergroup Santana. On further investigation they realised just how apt the name would actually be as their jewellery shop brand.
Historians amongst you will no doubt know that to the ancient Eqyptians, Abraxas was a mystical name given to a supreme god. It was also a word they would engrave on stones and was much sought after to be worn as amulets to ward off evil.
Yes, even in those days, 'Abraxas' meant celebrated jewellery.
